Virtual Reality training for the maritime industry

In 2014 I started a company with 2 guys from Norway who I’d never met in person. (Ask me if that was a good idea… 🤦‍♂️) We set out to build VR projects for the Maritime industry. I was the only engineer on our little team of 3 people and built a couple of really cool systems.
First and foremost a modular ship-simulator that
  • worked in VR as well as across 8 big screens
  • supported multiple players (on different vessels or different positions on the same vessel)
  • could be driven from an actual captain’s chair
  • worked standalone but could also connect to the actual control system of a ship
    • could stream the actual screens of the control system onto the virtual screens in VR
  • had support for dynamic weather and time of day
  • included countless nice little bits and pieces like working marine lamps, dynamically controllable window wipers, etc., etc.
  • had an iPad app for the instructor to change the parameters of the training
With VR being very new there were countless interesting challenges to figure out… I might do a more detailed writeup at some point - watch this space…
